Rob - when you were working with Collider they were very heavy handed against us fans who were critical about The Last Jedi. Now that you're not working with those folks. I would love to hear your real feelings on how the main stream media companies like Collider basically became propaganda units of big companies like Disney, in particular Lucasfilm.

I like how there's a sort of connection to the end of Checkmate, where Number Six's air of authority is what helps sell the idea of him being a plant in the village. Especially at the end of this episode when he has broken Two and TELLS him to phone up and end his own career.

Totally agree and its not just Star Trek. I was the biggest fan Hollywood ever had now if my family asked me to go see a movie I'd say please no. But has Hollywood changed that much or have I just got older.

You know what you missed in Game of Thrones is the reason why Kings landing and Westeros was broke was because of their great subway building project which was completed to get you anywhere within the kingdoms in about 30 to 60 minutes.

I have the DVD which has both the original theatrical release and the newer adjusted han shot first version. I had my son watch the 77 version.

I haven't been following Stank New Worlds mainly because what I did watch seemed to be running on the fumes of old Star Trek - the Star Trek before JJ Abrams the Destroyer got in and vandalized it on his way to help club Star Wars to death in a corn field. But what I did watch bounced around between just about ok and godawful - particularly the dialogue. But this new clip where they're all 'Vulcans'? It's Spock's Brain levels of bad. It's burning down the farm to generate a little heat. It'll do it, but then you've lost the farm because you decided to set it on fire.

You talk out of both sides of your mouth. Blah blah blah everybody should be nice and be respectful. Yet out of the other side of your mouth you shit on things you don't like. This is why you will never be a part of the cool kids club. Creators don't shit on other creators. Yet you do this as a matter of fact. The fact that you don't get this is beyond the fucking pale.

SNW trailer is a glimpse of whats wrong with new Trek. They need to write for Trek nerds, new viewers will come. Bad writing is insulting.

Funny how in Enterprise, TOS, TNG, DS9 and Voyager whenever the characters needed to change their appearance it had to be done surgically by the ships doctor. Now the series between Enterprise and TOS they just take a serum. Just lazy writing and not knowing your franchise law.

Frankly, the ONLY thing you can say about Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is that it's better than Star Trek Discovery. That's all. That it's not as bad as Discovery is the show's only saving grace.

I joined crunchyroll because I wanted to watch LOTGH. I found the new one, looking still for the original series, but I was blown away by the sophisticated storytelling and multilayered characters. I finished S4, and Im now considering psycho-pass as my next watch. My interests right now is sci-fi. Anime has peaked my interest. I'll check out your list. This podcast was helpful. The answer to inexpensive and entertaining films is as simple as this: Gozilla minus One: *$15 Million Budget. Worldwide Box Office:$116 million!!! America has been making the wrong sort of movies ($300 Million+ "Stupor Hero" abominations) for too long with the wrong people. The people making these expensive turkeys would have a massive stroke if ever an original idea accidentally wandered across their pea brains.

The whole gene split thing was actually done in Star Trek before - in an episode of Voyager, Torres was split into two individuals - one klingon, one human, and they just about made it work. Any Star Trek fan knows that if you turned a human into a Vulcan they would have no training and would basically be a pre-Surak Vulcan - they would be wild and crazy with no emotional discipline. That could have made for an interesting story, rather than the gimmick which they used in that trailer.

That trailer looks so stupid...You are right Rob, the writers don't understand Star Trek at all. I will not watch this show. Can't stand the way Spock is treated on the show.

Star Trek was successful because of what it is. They want to change Star Trek into something different. Not sure how that makes sense to anyone. They could create something new, but I think they're so creatively bankrupt that they don't know how to.

From the first episode of SNW I noticed that these people don't get Vulcans. Their ideas of Vulcans are shallow and basically mimicry. Maybe they think modern audiences won't like a race of people who are disciplined, dedicated and emotionally in control of themselves because they are unrelatable to them. Yes, I just called modern audiences the very opposite of those principles. Every Vulcan I've seen in NuTrek is not like every Vulcan that came before them. These Vulcans are clearly faking it. They fake being logical, they play pretend at being emotionless and, worse, they are all actually far more emotional and immature than their actual ages. From the waiter in that first episode to Tapri and her mother it's incredibly obvious that these people are both emotional and immature and are simply acting like they are not. They seem to think that Vulcans are snobs who talk without fluctuating their voices. That's the other thing. Every Vulcan in SNW comes off as just some arrogant prick. I'm glad you're strong Rob. I'm not very good at articulation, it seems, looking at how I repeat myself, so it's good to have someone who can emphatically point out the things that are wrong with this series when we know that they're there but we can't quite explain why.

I could not agree more on every point. the scene was stupid and offensive. The writers thought they were being clever. it's dumb on so many levels AND it takes literally nothing what we know about the the Vulcans into account. It was insulting - as is the rest of the show.

Thank you for this, Rob. I felt so upset after seeing the SNW and Section 31 clips, and it was nice to have commiseration. The current writers not only lack sincerity, but they're lazy. There are several previous Trek episodes in which the story couldn't happen if Starfleet had a instantaneous wonder serum that changed a person's race/species. I think of "Tuvix," which you mentioned, but also "Faces," in which B'Ellana is split into two people. Both of those storylines deal with a larger philosophical question, which is so central to the heart of Trek and good storytelling.

Honestly I hope with the sale of paramount at this point they sell off star trek in hopes that someone else will come along and tells new star trek with writers from or like the writers from picard season 3

Its a shame that they are rewriting star trek the way they want instead of what star trek is meant to be, what it use to be. I honestly like the actors but they are writing terrible stories for them, I know it wouldn't matter but if I was on the show being a fan of Berman era star trek they would end up firing me because I would debate them at the table reads every time..lol.

I wish someone would do this for EVE Online. The lore is just as rich and I'm pretty sure the owners of the IP would be much more amenable to working with people of your caliber to have a project like this made.

I think if Khan was such a bad tyrant, and La’an his descendant, wouldn’t she try to be more discrete about it? Take a different name? Then you could use this even as a story, where someone discovers her descendency and maybe she can be kicked out of Starfleet alongside Una… or maybe she is initially disgusted with Una for keeping her secret and can discover her own hypocrisy or whatever. None of these are particularly genius directions and pretty cliche but a good writer can make it worj… if you really want to do something with her bei descended from Khan, other than it being a gimmick. Now, I think in spite of this gimmick, the character was actually handled pretty well so far, unlike others like Pike and Spock, so I’m not complaining, but yeah. Not great writing…

I adored TNG, DS9 and Voyager, but I gave up on Trek after the dissapointment of Nemesis. Until 2014 I was a huge Disney/Pixar nut, mostly because they were two of the studios we could count on for sincerity and quality. Now it's the opposite. Everything Disney has bought, it's all quips, it's all post modern, its all self referential and none of it has any sincere characters or plot because the stories no longer have moral centers. I miss the art of onscreen storytelling, it and music, were my lifeline growing up. It's kind of heartbreaking to not have it around anymore.
